FALLS HURT PIONEERS IN ALASKA

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Texas Woman’s University gymnastics team got off to a rough start falling to the University of Alaska-Anchorage, 188.725-190.400, in the first of their back-to-back meets.

The Pioneers (1-4) began the meet with a shaky start on the uneven bars. Dana Giametta scored a 9.550 to lead TWU.

“We started on the bars and could not recover from that event. Dana is the only one who hit her bar routine,” Kudlac added. “We also had falls on the floor.”

Rachel Goddard and Brittany Abney earned the top two honors on the balance beam. Goddard had a season-high score of 9.675. Abney also improved her season best with a 9.625 mark.

“Abney was fantastic again for a freshman. She hit all three of her routines for the second meet in a row,” Kudlac said.

The Pioneers top event as a team was the vault. Jessica Brozovich placed second with a 9.600 and Catherine Rodriguez was third with a score of 9.550.

Goddard led TWU on the floor exercise with a 9.650 which was good for fourth place. Abney and Westbrook each added scores of 9.625.

“We only hit 14 of 24 routines. I don’t care who you compete against that will not win,” head coach Frank Kudlac said. “They beat us by a point but we gave away four points in falls. That is the bad news. The good news is we get a chance to prove ourselves tonight. I expect my team to come back and compete like they are capable of.”

The Pioneers and Seawolves meet again on Feb. 12 beginning at 7:05 p.m.
