GYMNASTS DROP SEASON OPENER
DENTON,
Texas – The Texas Woman’s University gymnastics
team came up short against the No. 3 Oklahoma Sooners, 188.650
to 193.600, in the first meet of the year.
“We performed like a typical TWU first meet team. The first two events
were strong but on the last two our legs gave out. That is probably fatigue from
our training,” said head coach Frank Kudlac. “Overall the potential
for this team is very high. I was pleased with what we did with some people out.
Amber McMeans, Courtney Arno and Addi Hundley are out right now but will be back
quickly to make us even stronger.”
Seniors Lauren Kondikoff and Jessica Brozovich led the Pioneers. Kondikoff
finished second with a 9.550 on the beam. Brozovich tied for third place with
a 9.800 on the vault.
The Sooners edged the Pioneers in every event. Oklahoma’s Ashley Cooney
captured the all-around title with a total score of 39.025.
“We will get there in the beam and floor events. I think they will be our
best events,” added Kudlac. “I was pleased with Nicole (Poling) as
a freshman in her first collegiate meet. Brisa (Fuentes) did a nice job as well.
The seniors showed the leadership we needed and were fairly consistent. We are
looking forward to Air Force.”
The Pioneers continue their season on the road at Air Force on Jan. 22. The
dual meet begins at 6:00 p.m. They return to Magee Arena on Feb. 5 for a triangular
meet with Southeast Missouri State and BYU at 7:00 p.m.
