KUDLAC NAMED SEARS COLLEGE COACH OF THE YEAR
DENTON,
Texas – TWU gymnastics coach Frank Kudlac was
named the Sears Coach of the Year at the fourth annual Greater
Denton Sports Commission (GDSC) Athletic Banquet on Monday
night at the Gateway Center at the University of North Texas.
Kudlac has been at the helm of the Pioneers for 25 years. This season, he guided
the squad to second place finishes at the Midwest Independent Conference Championships
and the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships. He also coached the
co-national champion on the uneven bars, Brisa Fuentes, a freshman from Denton.
At the USAG Championships, five gymnasts earned All-American status and Courtney
Arno received the Mary Rae Soper Award, an honor voted on by the participating
coaches and given to a female gymnast in recognition of her passion, dedication
and devotion to the spirit of gymnastics. During the 2005 season, two gymnasts
were named the conference gymnast of the week. Kudlac also saw his team break
individual and team school records on the uneven bars and balance beam this
year.
In addition to the Pioneers’ impressive showing in the arena, the team
registered it’s highest-ever semester grade point average in the Fall
of 2004 with a 3.64 that included four gymnasts with a perfect 4.0 GPA. For
their academic accomplishments, 16 gymnasts were named to the MIC All-Academic
team with a 3.25 fall GPA or higher, and nine earned USAG Scholar-Athlete Awards
with a 3.2 GPA or higher and junior or senior status.
