TWU EXCELS ON BARS, DEFEATS AIR FORCE
DENTON,
Texas – The Texas Woman’s University gymnastics
team posted a season-high team score on the uneven bars but
had to count some falls which hurt their overall score in competition
against Air Force, Centenary and No. 22 Illinois before 443
fans at Magee Arena.
The Fighting Illini won the meet with a score of 195.750. The Ladies (194.300),
Pioneers (191.125) and Falcons (189.650) finished behind them in the quadrangular
meet.
The Pioneers (2-10) picked up their second win of the year defeating Air Force.
TWU fell to AFA earlier this season in a dual meet in Colorado.
“The good news is we got a little revenge over Air Force. Centenary is
a good team and you can’t make mistakes against good teams,” head
coach Frank Kudlac said. “My hats off to Illinois they are a fine team,
did a great job and competed very well.”
TWU started the meet on the vault. Jessica Brozovich hit her attempt scoring
a season-high 9.875 which was good for a share of first place. Nicole Poling
had her best score of the season as well with a 9.700.
Next up was the bars and the Pioneers posted a team score of 48.125. Courtney
Arno finished tied for third in the event with a season-high mark of 9.875.
Dana Giametta also posted a season best score of 9.750.
“We had a season-high bar score as a team, but it is frustrating because
we even counted a fall. I am very proud of Courtney, she upgraded her routine
for this meet,” Kudlac stated.
The Pioneers ran into trouble in the third rotation on the balance beam. Brittany
Abney posted her top score of the season, 9.725, and finished tied for sixth.
“The beam was disappointing. We had to count an 8.850 which hurts your
team score,” Kudlac said. “It is the same story for us, not hitting.
We hit 16 of 24 routines and still scored a decent team score. We had some big
hits but people have to back that up.”
TWU wrapped up the meet on the floor exercise. Rachel Goddard led the team
with a 9.775.
“I think at this point and time the team needs competition. We are doing
well in practice. Hitting in meets is extremely important throughout this next
stretch of meets. There are things that can be fixed but other things like falls
they need to dig deep to correct themselves,” Kudlac added.
The Pioneers are right back in action on March 1 hosting Utah State for a dual
meet beginning at 7:00 p.m.
