FALLS FRUSTRATE PIONEERS

ANCHORAGE , Alaska – The Texas Woman’s University gymnastics team won three of four events but it wasn’t enough to defeat the University of Alaska-Anchorage in their second consecutive night of competition.

The Pioneers (1-5) had an opportunity to take the meet on the balance beam but three falls prevented the victory. UAA edged TWU, 191.350-190.625, by less than a point to win their sixth straight dual meet.

“We did a little better but still only hit 15 of 24 routines and had to count five falls,” head coach Frank Kudlac said. “It is the same story for two nights in a row. This trip can be summed up in one word, frustrating.”

Senior Rachel Goddard won the beam and floor exercise events to lead TWU. She posted a season-high score on the beam with a 9.800 in addition to a 9.825 mark on the floor.

Sophomore Courtney Arno captured overall honors on the uneven bars with a season-high score of 9.825. Freshman Brittany Abney once again hit all three of her routines and finished in the top five on the vault, bars and beam.

“Rachel, Courtney and Brittany all turned in outstanding performances. Brittany is on a roll for a freshman,” Kudlac added. “It doesn’t let down from here as we compete every week until Nationals. We have a big meet this weekend.”

Next, TWU travels to Norman , Okla. , for a quad meet with Oklahoma , Missouri and Centenary on Feb. 20 at 2:00 p.m.
