TWU GETS BACK ON WINNING TRACK

DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University put an end to their five-game skid with a hard fought win over Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Lone Star Conference play.

With the win, the Pioneers (14-16, 6-3) moved themselves into a tie for second place in the LSC North division with the Lady Savages (18-13, 6-3). TWU beat SOSU in four games, 30-26, 26-30, 37-35 and 30-20.

“We hit well but defense kept us in game. Our goal is always to have four players in double-digit kills which we had,” head coach Shelly Barberee said. “We put Ana (Kordic) on Olivia Franceskini and she did a good job of containing her. Ana had a great night.”

The Pioneers took the first game with a more productive offense than the Lady Savages. Robin Hawkins led the TWU offense with four of her team-high 17 kills in the set.

SOSU reversed the score on TWU in the second game. The score was tied at 22 a piece when the Lady Savages went on an 8-4 run ending with a Franceskini kill.

The rally was on in game three. The score was 10-10 when both teams turned up the defense a notch. From that point on the game was within three points. After the first game point opportunity for TWU, 30-29, the teams battled through 13 more. The Pioneers prevailed by stringing together a block and a Lady Savage error. First, Kordic and Trina Berend combined to stop the Franceskini attack. Then a tough serve by Carley Messmer forced a SOSU ball handling miscue.

TWU kept the momentum on their side to take game four. The highlight of the set was a put down by Sharon Schaffner to position the Pioneers in front 10-3.

“We fought and kept coming back to win the third game,” Barberee added. “Overall it was a great game and we had fun which attributed to the win.”

The Pioneers recorded a season-high 134 digs led by Hawkins with 36. Kordic and Kandis Schroeder added 12 kills each. TWU controlled the net with 14 total team blocks including eights assists from Kordic.

Next, TWU welcomes Texas A&M-Commerce to Magee Arena on Oct. 29 at 2:00 p.m.
