PIONEERS START SLOW IN LOSS TO PATRIOTS

DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University couldn’t overcome a slow start in a four-game loss to Dallas Baptist University in non-conference action.

The Pioneers (13-16) dropped their fifth straight match, 21-30, 15-30, 30-17, 34-36, to the Patriots. DBU hit .166 with 10 service aces in the win.

“Our defense was weak. They had 10 aces but it was not the serving, it was receive errors on our part,” head coach Shelly Barberee said. “We are better than how we are playing right now.”

TWU never led in games one and two. The Patriots hit .387 with 30 kills as the Pioneers hit .039 with 20 put downs.

The Pioneers came out strong after intermission to take game three. An Ana Kordic kill started the attack for the home team. TWU added 13 more kills to force another game.

“We got motivated and played well in game three. It was just too late to start playing,” Barberee added.

Both teams wanted game four but DBU was able to string together two consecutive points. The Patriots got an ace and a Pioneer attack error to take the match.

Trina Berend led the team with 13 kills while hitting .161. Robin Hawkins and Ana Kordic tallied double-digit kills as well with 12 and 10, respectively. Carley Messmer had 42 assists and 13 digs.

“Trina stepped in for Nicole ( Everett) who is out with an injury. She led the team in kills off the bench. You can’t ask for much more,” Barberee said.

Next, TWU hosts Southeastern Oklahoma State in Lone Star Conference action on Oct. 27 at 7:00 p.m.
