PIONEERS FALL TO NO. 14 WILDCATS IN FOUR GAMES
DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University fell to No. 14 Abilene Christian University in four games to conclude play at the Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament.
The Pioneers (13-13) became just one of two teams to win a game against the Wildcats (20-3) since Sept. 16. Cameron also took game one from ACU yesterday. The Wildcats extended their school-record winning streak to 20 straight matches with three wins in the tournament.
“This was one of our better matches of the season. We had nothing to lose,” head coach Shelly Barberee said. “We played well but errors cost us the second game. The crowd was really into it.”
TWU registered four straight points to start the match with three kills and an ACU attack error. The game remained close as both teams played remarkable defense. TWU slightly out hit ACU, .143 to .061, but utilized a solid back row effort for the victory, 30-28.
The second set was just as close. The teams battled back and forth until a pair of Pioneer hitting miscues pushed the Wildcats to a 31-29 win.
The Wildcat offense was the difference in games three and four. ACU hit .267 as a team in the third set for a 30-21 triumph. Amanda Slate had six of her match-high 19 kills in the fourth game as ACU took the match 30-28.
“ACU serves really tough especially Slate. We stepped up and passed well and were able to get a block on Slate as well,” Barberee stated.
Robin Hawkins recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 22 digs. Carley Messmer added 11 digs in addition to 40 assists. Michele Villarreal had 22 digs at the libero position. Kandis Schroeder and Nicole Everett were in double figure kills with 11 and 10, respectively.
“The match was a great way to go into Central Oklahoma. We proved we can compete with anyone,” added Barberee.
Next, TWU travels to Central Oklahoma on Oct. 20 for a key LSC game at 7:00 p.m. UCO defeated TWU, 3-0, in their first meeting this season.
After winning seven of 11 matches on the first day, the North Division took seven of 10 to end the tournament with a 14-7 record over their South Division counterparts. Results from all 21 matches are available at http://www.twu.edu/athletics/05_volleyball/05_LSCcrossover_schedule.htm.
