VOLLEYBALL SPLITS WITH KINGSVILLE AND WEST TEXAS

DENTON, Texas – Texas Woman’s University beat Texas A&M-Kingsville and fell to West Texas A&M in the first day of action as the hosts of the Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament.

The Pioneers (13-12) won in four-games over the Javelinas, 30-13, 30-23, 30-32 and 30-27. TWU started with a 9-0 run in game one while Ana Kordic was serving. From that point the offense took over out hitting Kingsville .247 to .095.

Four Pioneers had double figures kills led by Robin Hawkins with 16. Nicole Everett, Kandis Schroeder and Kordic also had over 10 put downs. Carley Messmer notched 51 assists and 13 digs. TWU also had four players with double-digit digs led by libero Michele Villarreal with 16.

“ Kingsville was a very good win; they went undefeated at the last Crossover.  We started extremely well but had some errors at end of the third game,” head coach Shelly Barberee said.

In the second match, the Lady Buffs got the sweep 30-19, 30-15 and 30-19. TWU struggled to manage anything against WTAMU. The Pioneers passing led to a meager offensive production with a .025 hitting percentage.

Kordic led the squad with nine kills. Messmer had 24 assists, seven digs and six kills. Villarreal added ten digs.

“It’s just something about West Texas. Our older players get intimidated. They are always strong but didn’t bring anything we don’t have,” Barberee added. “We went 1-1 and I saw some positives today so we have to capitalize on those. We play a great team, Abilene Christian, tomorrow. It will be a tough match.”

TWU concludes the Crossover with a 3:00 p.m. match against Abilene Christian on Oct. 15 in Magee Arena.
