YELLOW JACKETS FALL IN THREE GAMES
DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University picked up a non-conference win over Howard Payne University in three games.
The Pioneers (12-11, 5-1) defeated the Yellow Jackets 30-24, 30-8 and 30-13. The victory extends TWU’s winning streak to five matches.
“We started slow but came back and got everybody on the court. The plan was to get everyone’s confidence up going into this weekend,” head coach Shelly Barberee said. “Taking all three games into consideration we had a good match as a team.”
The first set was back and forth but the Pioneers took the game behind 22 kills including seven by Robin Hawkins. TWU jumped out to a 10-2 lead in game two by hitting an efficient .381.
“I think we got warmed up after game one and got the momentum on our side,” Barberee added. “We had to adjust our defense to their offense which was more rolling than hitting.”
In game three, TWU had 16 kills and hit .379 to put HPU away. Trina Berend and Sharon Schaffner led the way with four kills each.
Hawkins led the offense with 11 kills while hitting at a .400 clip. Berend and Schaffner added nine kills apiece. Carley Messmer recorded 29 set assists with three kills and eight digs as well. The Pioneers controlled the net with eight total team blocks.
Next, the Pioneers host the Lone Star Conference Crossover tournament on Oct. 14-15 which puts the North Division against the South Division. TWU faces the three top teams from the South in Texas A&M-Kingsville (11:00 a.m.) and West Texas A&M (5:00 p.m.) on Friday and Abilene Christian (3:00 p.m.) on Saturday.
“We have three tough games. ACU is playing great right now,” Barberee said. “We are playing at the top of our game. This is a good time for the competition heading into the next round league play.”
