PIONEERS SWEEP BULLDOGS TO WIN FOURTH STRAIGHT
DENTON , Texas – With a well balanced attack, Texas Woman’s University swept Southwestern Oklahoma State University to win its fourth straight match.
The Pioneers (11-11, 5-1) defeated the Bulldogs 30-25, 30-13 and 30-27. This is the first year of volleyball for SWOSU (3-16, 0-4).
“We didn’t play as well as we could have but played as a team,” head coach Shelly Barberee said. “We wanted to finish in three because they took a game from Central Oklahoma and Cameron.”
Ana Kordic started game one with a solo block which propelled TWU to a 9-1 lead. The Pioneers had 17 kills including five by Robin Hawkins and hit .250 in the first set.
TWU hit an impressive .367 in game two with 14 kills and only three attack errors. In the third game, the Pioneers ran a 6-2 attack with Carley Messmer and Jill Arnold splitting the setting duties. The teams were tied 26-26 before three TWU kills and a SWOSU hitting error ended the match.
“The reason for the 6-2 was to try and get a triple-double for Carley. I think she deserves the recognition. It also got Jill some setting reps,” Barberee added.
Hawkins led the offensive effort with 10 kills. Messmer recorded 35 set assists, nine digs and five kills. Madlyn Craven paced the defense with 10 digs. Trina Berend had four block assists.
“Madlyn and Trina had good games. Everyone got on the court tonight,” Barberee said. “We are peaking at the right time. I am pleased with how we are playing and our attitude. We are having fun, which is half the battle.”
Next, TWU hosts Howard Payne in a non-conference contest on Oct. 12 at 6:00 p.m.
