SERVING GAME LEADS TWU TO WIN
DENTON , Texas – With 13 service aces, Texas Woman’s University defeated Midwestern State University 3-1 in Lone Star Conference action at Magee Arena.
The Pioneers (10-11, 4-1) served the Lady Indians tough to win the match 30-24, 30-18, 32-34 and 30-26. Sharon Schaffner led the team with five service aces.
“Overall we played great and had some definite high points,” head coach Shelly Barberee said. “Nicole ( Everett ) had a great game. We played hard in game four coming back to tie it up.”
TWU controlled the match from the outset to win the first two games. The third game went to the wire with MSU prevailing behind seven kills from Candice Main to force a fourth game. In the fourth set, MSU was ahead 23-18 before TWU reeled off six straight points with Everett serving to take the lead 24-23. The Pioneers stayed ahead from that point on to win the match.
“MSU has potential, they are a big team but we worked hard to contain Main . She is a good player. Our game plan was to serve hard,” Barberee added. “We are peaking at the right time and playing well. The conference matches are important and we have won the last three.”
Everett and Robin Hawkins paced the TWU offense with 17 and 15 kills, respectively. Libero Michele Villarreal had 17 digs and Hawkins added 14. Carley Messmer had 50 set assists in addition to 10 digs. The Pioneers had 11 total team blocks led by Kandis Schroeder with three solo and three assists.
The Pioneers continue league play hosting Southwestern Oklahoma State on Oct. 6 at 7:00 p.m.
