DEFENSIVE EFFORT LEADS TWU TO WIN

COMMERCE, Texas – Behind a strong defensive effort, Texas Woman’s University beat Texas A&M-Commerce in Lone Star Conference action.

The Pioneers (8-11, 2-1) shut down the Lions (5-11, 0-1) offense to win 30-22, 30-27, 28-30, 28-30, 15-13. TWU controlled the net with a season-high 15 total team blocks. Ana Kordic led the endeavor with 4.5 blocks including three solo stops.

“This was one of our better games defensively. We fought for a lot of balls,” head coach Shelly Barberee said. “We have been working on defense this week so it was nice to see that pay off. I am proud of the outcome and effort since conference counts.”

Robin Hawkins posted a double-double with 15 kills and 17 digs. Nicole Everett had 14 put downs while hitting .242. Sharon Schaffner added 11 kills as well. Carley Messmer ran the Pioneer attack with 48 set assists. Kasye Richmond recorded double-digit digs with 13.

TWU continues league play at Southeastern Oklahoma State on Oct. 1 at 2:00 p.m.
