PIONEERS OPEN CONFERENCE PLAY WITH WIN OVER AGGIES
DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University stopped a four-game slide with a three-game win over Cameron University to begin Lone Star Conference action.
The Pioneers (7-9, 1-0) clicked on all cylinders recording a .325 hitting percentage. That is the first time TWU has hit over .300 this season. The Aggies (9-6, 0-1) had trouble with the serving game recording 14 total service and receive errors in the match.
“We finally played like we can. This is the team I saw in two-a-days. We have been playing not to lose but played to win tonight,” head coach Shelly Barberee said. “They had us down in game one but we kept the intensity up. The hitters were banging away.”
Cameron led 28-25 in game one before a TWU charge consisting of two Pioneer kills and an Aggie hitting error tied the game at 28. Kandis Schroeder had a kill before a Cameron attack error gave TWU game one, 31-29.
Games two (30-21) and three (30-20) were all TWU. The Pioneers out hit the Aggies, .438 to .194, in game three to win the match.
Schroeder led the Pioneers with 14 kills while hitting at a .435 clip. Robin Hawkins and Ana Kordic added 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Carley Messmer ran the offense with 47 set assists. Libero Michele Villarreal paced the defense with 14 digs. TWU registered seven service aces as well.
“It was a total team effort and an awesome win over Cameron in our first conference match,” Barberee added. “We had a great week of practice which carried through to the match. I am extremely proud of the team.”
TWU continues LSC play with Central Oklahoma on Sept. 24. First serve is at 12:00 p.m. in Magee Arena.
