TWU SPLITS IN ACTION AT QUAD MATCH

DENTON, Texas – Texas Woman’s fell in five games (23-30, 27-30, 30-17, 30-17 and 12-15) to Southern Arkansas before defeating Ouachita Baptist in three games (33-31, 30-21, 35-33) at the Quadrangular match.

“Overall I think we played better and with more intensity in the first match. After sitting around we were flat in the second,” head coach Shelly Barberee said. “We got the win but are not playing with the intensity and drive we need.”

The Pioneers (6-5) fought back against the Muleriders with a solid serving game. The team recorded 15 service aces led by Ana Kordic with five and Kandis Schroeder with four. After losing games one and two, TWU won games three and four to set the table for a fifth game. SAU led the whole time en route to a 15-12 win to take the match.

TWU had four players, Schroeder, Trina Berend, Robin Hawkins and Nicole Everett, with double-digit kills. Hawkins notched her sixth straight double-double with 18 kills and 19 digs. Carley Messmer ran the offense with 56 assists in addition to six kills and 10 digs.

The Pioneers utilized the serving line again to beat the Tigers. Kordic led the way again with four aces and Everett added three. The team hit .151 and fought to win two close games. Everett led the offense with 12 kills. Hawkins and Schroeder registered 11 and 10 put downs as well.

“On the positive side we did have 25 aces for the day and only 13 errors. Our goal every match is to hit .250, so we didn’t accomplish that,” Barberee said. “I didn’t want to split but we finished on a good note.”

In other action, Tarleton State was undefeated with wins over SAU and OBU. The Muleriders split and the Tigers dropped both their matches.

Next, TWU travels to Dallas Baptist on Sept. 13 for a non-conference game at 7:00 p.m.
