PIONEERS SPLIT ON FIRST DAY OF ACTION

LAKEWOOD , Colo. – The Texas Woman’s University volleyball team split in its first day of action at the Mile High Classic hosted by Colorado Christian University in Lakewood , Colo.

The Pioneers (1-1) fell to Lewis University ( 30-24, 30-26, 30-19) before defeating CCU (30-15, 28-30, 30-14, 30-21) on day one of the Classic.

“We didn’t play as a team in the first match. We played better against CCU,” head coach Shelly Barberee said. “We are still trying to mesh and used some different rotations today.”

The Flyers took advantage of the Pioneers 11 serving errors en route to the three-game victory. TWU controlled the game with CCU as four players registered double digit kills. Robin Hawkins led the way with a double-double including 15 kills and 26 digs. Lindsey McCutcheon added 12 kills in addition to 10 put downs by Trina Berend and Sharon Schaffner. The team also recorded 12.5 blocks.

“Overall I was pretty pleased. It was good to get a win on the first day of the season,” Barberee added.

The Pioneers face Chadron State and New Mexico Highlands on Saturday to finish the tournament.
