THREE MORE JOIN PIONEER VOLLEYBALL TEAM
DENTON,
Texas – Jill Arnold, Nicole Everett and Michele
Villarreal have signed National Letters of Intent to play volleyball
for Texas Woman’s University announced head coach Shelly
Barberee.
“I think this is a good recruiting group. I see it as the top class in
my career,” Barberee said. “All three student-athletes have great
grades. Seven (five freshman and two transfers) is a lot to bring in. We will
work on bonding as a team early.”
Arnold, Everett and Villarreal join Madlyn Craven, Kathryn Rogge, Sharon Schaffner
and Kandis Schroeder who signed with the Pioneers in the fall.
Arnold joins the Pioneers after playing one season each at Alvin Community
College and Tyler Junior College. The Alvin, Texas, native graduated from Alvin
High School in 2002. She was a two-year letterwinner in volleyball for the
Yellowjackets. As a senior, she was named team captain and earned all-district
first team honors. At Alvin CC, Arnold ranked 23rd in assists and 20th in service
aces nationally for honorable mention accolades. During the 2004 season at
Tyler JC, she was 17th in service aces in the national NJCAA rankings. Arnold
was also on the Dean’s List, a Texas Scholar and all-academic region
14. Arnold is active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
“I was looking for another setter to compliment Carley Messmer because
ultimately we would like to run a 6-2 offense. Jill is very similar to Carley
and compliments her in setting and size,” Barberee said. “She is
a really smart player and can hit the ball. I was proud to sign her because we
went against a division I school to get her."
Everett joins TWU after two seasons at Richland College. She graduated from
Crandall High School in 2001. Everett was named to the Texas Girls Coaches
Association All-Star team as a senior. She was also named all-district three
times including district offensive Player of the Year and Most Valuable player
honors in 2000. At Richland, she was an NJCAA All-American nominee and all-conference
first team. In the NJCAA national rankings she was in the top four in hitting
efficiency (44.810), blocks per game (2.414) and kills per game (4.914). She
earned her associates of science degree in 2005. Everett enjoys swimming and
cooking and is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
“Nicole is a strong middle blocker. She was in the national statistics
in every category,” Barberee added. “She is very loud and mobile.
It is good to be heard in the middle because it pulls blockers. I look for her
to come in and make something out of our middle position.”
Villarreal hails from San Antonio, Texas, and attended O’Connor High
School. She was a two-year letterwinner in volleyball for the Panthers. After
her senior year, she was a unanimous all-district first team pick as well as
team captain and MVP. Villarreal played club volleyball for the Bexar County
Juniors 18’s. A member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta
and the English Honor Society she graduated in the top 15 percent of her class.
Villarreal enjoys running and movies and is active in her youth group.
“Michele has big shoes to fill in statistically for Paz Diaz. I think she
will fit in well at TWU,” Barberee said. “She plays on a very strong
club team in San Antonio and her high school ran a very similar defense to ours.
I look for her to step in as our libero.”
