TWU IN CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT WITH WIN

DENTON , Texas – With a spot in the Lone Star Conference Tournament on the line, Texas Woman’s University beat Eastern New Mexico University , 2-1, sending the Pioneers to the postseason for the first time.

The Pioneers ( 9-8-1 , 4-5) will be the fifth seed in the six-team tournament hosted by the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond , Okla. TWU plays at either 12:00 p.m. or 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3 against the fourth seed which could be Midwestern State or Texas A&M-Commerce.

“That was the longest game of my life. I am proud of them and excited to go to the tournament for the first time,” head coach Fleur Benatar said. “We played hard and knew what was at stake.”

On a windy afternoon, TWU had the breeze at their back in the first half. The Pioneers spent a majority of the time on offense taking eight shots and two corner kicks. Zia goalie Stephanie Sanchez had six saves to keep TWU off the board.

TWU took the lead at the 69:24 mark as Romy Luna scored off an assist from Christine Hornisher. Luna took a perfect lead pass from Hornisher and beat the goalie one-on-one with a low shot into the right corner of the net.

Then moments later, TWU was called for a foul in the penalty box resulting in an ENMU penalty kick. Katharine Coulombe capitalized to tie the game.

The Pioneers responded with the eventual game-winner by Emily Meinen at the 76:18 mark. Meinen one-touched a pass from Luna into the net from the middle of the box. The goal was her team-high eighth of the season.

“Romy was about to cross the ball and I saw it coming overhead. I just put it in the goal. The first thought that came to my mind was the conference tournament,” junior Emily Meinen said.
