PIONEERS LOSE MOMENTUM AND GAME
DENTON, Texas – Texas Woman’s University played outstanding in the first half but a foul in penalty box gave West Texas A&M University the momentum as they went on to win 3-1.
The Pioneers (8-8-1, 3-5) out shot the Lady Buffs (10-4-1, 7-1) but weren’t able to capitalize on their opportunities.
“The first half was great. Everyone was pumped up,” head coach Fleur Benatar said. “It was a very unfortunate call in the first two minutes of the second half. That changed the game.”
TWU took the lead into halftime after an Emily Meinen goal. At the 27:01 mark, Meinen was able to score her seventh goal of the year after a Natalie Grant corner kick. Grant put the ball right into the box, where it bounced off several players before Meinen deposited it in the back of the net.
Less than two minutes into the second half, TWU was called for a direct free kick foul in the penalty box which resulted in a WT penalty kick. Misti Northcutt was awarded the kick and hit a low shot into the left corner of the net.
The Lady Buffs took the lead 10 minutes later as Whitney McClain scored off a Samantha Calcote cross into the box. WT added an insurance goal at the 79:02 mark. Elisabeth Markussen scored after TWU failed to clear the ball following a WT corner kick.
“In the first half we connected. The defense played solid in the back, the centers were looking and the outsides were moving forward,” sophomore Amanda Odino said. “There was nothing we can do about the call in the second half and then they scored again. We had plenty of chances.”
The Pioneers conclude the regular season by hosting Eastern New Mexico on Oct. 30 at 12:00 p.m. The Pioneers are currently tied for seventh in the league standings as they vie for a spot in the six-team Lone Star Conference tournament.
