SCORING CONTINUES AS PIONEERS WIN THIRD STRAIGHT
DENTON , Texas – The Texas Woman’s University offense continued to click in a 3-1 win over Dallas Baptist University in non-conference action.
The Pioneers (8-4, 3-1) won their third straight game. With three goals, TWU set a new team record with 32 breaking the previous high of 29 set in 2002, their first season of play.
“The scoring has been great, it is contagious. We have talked about finishing and than executed,” head coach Fleur Benatar said.
Junior Emily Meinen put the Pioneers ahead early with her team-high sixth goal. Just five minutes into the contest she scored with a shot over the goalie from the left wing. Then Melissa Scott scored her fourth goal of the year with a low right shot that deflected off the Patriot keeper at the 24:34 mark.
“We threw a new system at them in the locker room before the game, changing our defense from a flat four to a two and two,” Benatar stated. “The different look by the defenders made us pick up more balls in the midfield. I think it helped us score early.”
Down 2-0 at intermission, DBU scored at the 48:43 mark with a shot from the middle over Aly Vincent. TWU responded with an Amanda Odino goal a minute later. Odino scored her second goal of the year off a shot from the top of the box. Vincent was solid in goal with six saves as the Patriots took 14 shots.
Next, TWU travels to Central Oklahoma (9-3, 3-0) for a meeting of the top two teams in the Lone Star Conference on Oct. 14 at 4:00 p.m.
