MEINEN GOALS LEAD TWU TO VICTORY

DENTON , Texas – Junior Emily Meinen scored twice as Texas Woman’s University defeated Northeastern State University , 3-2, in Lone Star Conference play.

The Pioneers (7-4, 3-1) jumped ahead early scoring twice in the first 21 minutes of action. The Lady Reds ( 4-7-1 , 1-3-1 ) came back with a pair of goals in the second half.

“Our first half was good with two goals. The second half turned into a game. NSU was dangerous,” head coach Fleur Benatar stated. “I thought the team played well. We knew what was at stake and finished.”

After NSU took two shots on goal right out of the gate, TWU took control of the game with two goals. Emily Meinen scored with a shot off a Lady Red goalie deflection. Erica Butler put the Pioneers up 2-0 with a goal after a Sue Cribbes free kick.

The Lady Reds scored minutes into the second half off a Kyndall Dooley cross into the box which Kacie Hohenberger put in. Meinen responded with another goal at the 68:04 mark off a Butler assist. Meinen appeared to have her third goal of the day minutes later but it was negated by a TWU offsides call. In the 85 th minute, NSU scored again taking the game down to the wire.

Meinen has scored five goals this season and holds the school record with 13 goals in her career. Aly Vincent allowed two goals with nine saves in goal for TWU. Both teams had 17 fouls called against them in the contest.

“Emily had an outstanding game. She had two goals and should have had three. She was on fire,” Benatar said. “Aly had some great saves. Erica worked very hard and Natalie Grant was good off the bench. Offsides and restarts were costly today. Their second goal was after a restart.”

The Pioneers conclude their four-game homestand with a non-conference game against Dallas Baptist on Oct. 11 at 7:00 p.m.
