SCOTT AND GRANT SCORE IN WIN OVER EAST CENTRAL

DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University scored twice in the second half to beat East Central University in Lone Star Conference action and pick up their sixth win of the season.

The Pioneers (6-4, 2-1) are off to their best start in the programs brief four-year history. The six wins overall surpasses the previous high of five victories in the 2002 and 2004 seasons.

“The first half was a little suspect. We wanted to play well in front of the home crowd and they were coming at us,” head coach Fleur Benatar said. “We talked at halftime about turning the switch. After that they gained confidence and knew what they had to do.”

The Pioneers tried to capitalize on two corner kicks late in the first half. At the 37:58 mark, Erica Butler took a shot in the box off the Natalie Grant corner which was saved by ECU goalie Christie Sarginson. A few minutes later, Grant put another corner into play but the Lady Tigers defense cleared it.

In the second half, TWU had three near goals before scoring. Natalie Harrison had a free kick sail high and Butler and Amanda Odino hit the crossbar prior to the Melissa Scott goal. Scott put the ball in the net unassisted at the 68:51 mark to put the Pioneers ahead. Grant added an insurance goal with less than seven minutes left in regulation, scoring off an Ashley Frazier assist on a cross which she one touched into the net.

“Melissa, Amanda, Natalie ( Harrison) and Erica all made an impact on the game. Ashley and Natalie (Grant) connected on the second goal,” Benatar added.”

Freshman Aly Vincent had five saves in goal for her fourth shutout this season for TWU. The Pioneers took 28 shots compared to just eight for the Lady Tigers.

TWU continues league play hosting Northeastern State on Oct. 9 at 1:00 p.m.
