MSU NIPS TWU, 2-1
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – In a back and forth game featuring a fierce wind, Midwestern State scored twice in the second half to defeat Texas Woman’s, 2-1, in Lone Star Conference action.
The Pioneers (5-3, 1-1) and Lady Indians ( 3-4-1 , 2-0) both entered the game with a 1-0 conference record. With the win, MSU joins Central Oklahoma atop the league standings.
“It was a great game. The wind was out of control. We dominated the first half with the wind,” head coach Fleur Benatar said. “In the second half the wind picked up. Amanda (Odino) was instrumental tonight and Melissa (Scott) was dangerous every time she touched the ball.
TWU out shot MSU, 10-4, in the first half but the Lady Indians took 12 more shots in the second half. Less than five minutes into the second half, MSU found the back of the net with a rebound shot off the cross bar. The Lady Indians took a 2-0 advantage with a goal from the left side at the 81:21 mark. In the 88th minute, Romy Luna put TWU on the board off an assist from Sue Cribbes in the middle of the box for her third goal of the year. Freshman Aly Vincent had 11 saves in goal for the Pioneers.
“I am proud of the team; we controlled 85 percent of the game. We had several opportunities and worked hard until the buzzer,” Benatar added.
Next, TWU host St. Edward’s on Oct. 2 at 4:00 p.m.
