SOCCER WINS SEASON OPENER AGAINST DELTA STATE
DALLAS , Texas – The Texas Woman’s University soccer team won their season opener 1-0 over Delta State on the campus of Dallas Baptist University .
The Pioneers managed 22 shots in the game but didn’t capitalize until the 86 th minute when sophomore Amanda Odino found the back of the net. After spending most of the game on the attack, Odino took a shot which took a big bounce past the Delta State goalie.
“It was a very stressful second half. We maintained possession and took what seemed like 25 shots. The score was off a weird bounce for the win,” head coach Fleur Benatar said. “We need to learn to capitalize and put the team away so it’s not so hairy at the end. I am proud of them for sticking in there in some very hot weather.”
Freshman Aly Vincent started in goal for TWU and played the first half. Krista Elbert entered in the second half to relieve Vincent and keep the shutout intact. Odino led the team with six shots followed by Melissa Scott with four and newcomer Jackie Necroto added three off the bench.
The victory marked the only time in four years of competition that TWU has started the season with a win. It was also the first ever meeting between the two teams.
The Pioneers host Incarnate Word tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. at the University of North Texas Rec Sports Complex .
