RUSS-KELLER AND TOWNSEND DELIVER FOR PIONEERS
DENTON , Texas – The Texas Woman’s University softball team started the 2005 season with two victories over Cameron. TWU (2-0) won game one, 4-0, and game two, 11-3, in five innings.
Sophomore Lindsy Russ-Keller went the distance in game one tossing a one-hitter. Russ-Keller faced 24 batters and struck out seven. The only hit allowed was a lead-off single up the middle by Cameron’s Nicole Fleming in the sixth inning.
“Lindsy is an all-region type player for us and very, very consistent,” head coach Dianne Baker said.
The Pioneers scored three runs on three hits in the second inning to take an early lead. Amanda Danesi singled up the middle before Stefani Easter and Megan Helms advanced her to third base with a sacrifice bunt and fielder’s choice. Tiffany Nance entered to pinch run for Danesi with Helms at first base. Junior Sarah White delivered with a two RBI triple to right center. Freshman Rhonda Sherman plated White with a sacrifice line drive to centerfield putting TWU ahead by three.
TWU added another run in the fourth inning as Amanda Emory and Courtney Martin both singled up the middle. With two outs, Arnold hit the 3-2 offering through the right side scoring Emory.
Martin was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Emory and Arnold added two hits each.
While the Pioneers pitching dominated game one the offense took over in game two. TWU scored 11 runs on 11 hits and four Aggie errors.
Rachel Townsend led the way with a school record three doubles, three runs scored and two RBIs. Townsend broke the mark of two doubles in a game previously held by 16 players. She doubled in the first, third and fifth innings.
Cameron jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning but TWU got those back in the third to tie the game. In the fourth, the Pioneers put seven runs on the board utilizing two Aggie errors. Danesi, Megan Helms and Sherman each collected two RBIs in the inning.
“We showed some offensive power, which is good. We started to adjust at the end. After tying the game our desire to win showed and the hitting was harder,” Baker said.
In the fifth Townsend led off with a double over the centerfielder. With one out, Danesi delivered the game ending run with a single up the middle to conclude the game in five innings.
“I knew we just needed one run at the end. Amanda came through with the hit and run on,” added Baker.
Danesi, Sherman and Emory each had two hits. Amanda Chambless earned the win in four innings of work. Crystal Hankel retired all three batters she faced in relief.
TWU returns to Pioneer Field on Feb. 6 for a doubleheader with St. Edward’s beginning at 2:00 p.m.
