THREE PIONEERS HONORED BY THE
LONE STAR CONFERENCE
DENTON,
Texas – Texas Woman’s University softball
players Lindsy Russ-Keller, Amanda Emory and Lauren Gustartis
were named to the 2005 Lone Star all-Conference South Division
team released today by the league office.
Russ-Keller earned first team postseason honors while Emory and Gustartis made
the second squad. This is the second time Russ-Keller and Gustartis have made
the team and the first for Emory.
A sophomore, Russ-Keller led the Pioneers with dominant pitching throughout
the season. After a stellar freshman campaign, she posted a 1.61 ERA this year
with 126 strikeouts. Russ-Keller broke the school record for strikeouts this
year against the College of Saint Mary with 13 sit downs. She was the LSC Pitcher
of the Week on March 22 and has been named the Denton Record-Chronicle Player
of the Week twice this year.
“Lindsy was one of the top two pitchers in the conference this year. Unfortunately
we did not hit or play defense for her,” head coach Dianne Baker said. “It
shows talent to get the award without any postseason play. It is a sign of respect
to be on the first team as well.”
Emory was honored after a solid year in centerfield for TWU. She started all
but one of the Pioneers games with a .298 batting average. Emory had 31 hits,
scored 15 runs and stole 11 bases in 13 attempts. She registered 51 put outs
with four assists while fielding at a .965 clip.
“Amanda played with great heart this year. She gutted it out and made some
tremendous plays in the outfield,” Baker stated. “I look for her
to be on the first team next year but this is a start. She put in a lot of hard
work and dedication.”
Gustartis led the team offensively with a .339 batting average with 20 hits
in 59 at-bats. She hit three home runs, three doubles and two triples with
11 RBI. The senior had an outstanding .610 slugging percentage and reached
base .443 percent of the time.
“I am extremely proud of Lauren. She didn’t get to play a lot and
I probably should have played her more,” Baker said. “In her limited
time she hit above .300. In retrospect I should have let her swing more.”
