PIONEERS SHUT OUT LADY AGGIES

DENTON , Texas – The Texas Woman’s University softball team shut out Oklahoma Panhandle State with a strong defensive performance winning game one, 6-0, and game two, 4-0.

The Pioneers (19-9, 5-3) didn’t commit an error all night while making several nice plays on defense. In addition, the offense parlayed 15 hits into 10 runs for the non-conference sweep.

“I thought both games consisted of big plays on defense. Rachel (Townsend), Megan (Helms), Rhonda ( Sherman ) and Amanda ( Arnold ) all had big time games at the plate and in the field which made the difference tonight,” head coach Dianne Baker said. “We did leave more people on base than I would like but swung the bat well. The pitching was a little rusty coming off Easter break.”

The Pioneers won game one, 6-0, with seven hits and five Aggie errors. TWU put a run on the board in the first, third and sixth innings and added three in the fifth.

In the fifth frame, the Pioneers scored three runs to take control of the game. With two outs, Townsend, Danesi and Sherman scored to put TWU on top, 5-0.

Lindsey Russ-Keller picked up the shutout win (12-4), her ninth of the season, allowing three hits with five strikeouts.

Six different Pioneers recorded a hit led by Townsend with two base knocks and two RBI. Courtney Martin, Sherman, Danesi, Arnold and Sarah White each had a hit as well. Martin also stole her team-high 12th base of the season in the first inning.

In game two, the Pioneers jumped on the scoreboard in the first frame as Townsend led off with a walk. She advanced around the bases before scoring on a passed ball. TWU put up three more runs in the fifth frame with four hits.

Amanda Chambless (7-3) earned the complete game victory and her fifth shutout of the year. She allowed three hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Townsend, Martin and Helms each notched two hits.

Next, TWU takes its 15-1 record at home into a Lone Star Conference South Division series with No. 10 Angelo State this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader on April 1st and 2nd; first pitch is at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
