TWU WINS ONE AND DROPS ONE AT KINGSVILLE

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Amid some controversy the Texas Woman’s University softball team split again with Texas A&M-Kingsville in Lone Star Conference South Division play to conclude their four-game series. The Pioneers (12-7, 2-2) dropped game one, 2-5, and won game two, 5-1.

“I am very happy to be out of Kingsville with a split, they are a good team. We had a weird situation happen to us today,” head coach Dianne Baker said. “In the fifth inning of the first game with Kingsville on top 3-2, I switched pitchers with runners at first and third and two outs. Crystal struck out the batter and both teams including the batter headed to the dugouts. Then Kingsville sent the batter to first because they believed that Stefani (Easter) dropped the third strike and both runners scored with our team in the dugout. I have appealed the call because the batter has to proceed towards first base on a dropped third strike and is out if she leaves the field of play to the conference office. It was complete chaos, to have them score two runs with nobody on the field is pretty interesting. We were behind at the time but I would like to lose with the team on the field and not in the dugout. Right now it is a win for Kingsville .”

Rachel Townsend led off game one with a walk before scoring on Amanda Arnold’s single through the right side. Down by a run in the fourth inning, Arnold singled and came around to score on a Javelina throwing error when Amanda Danesi put down a sacrifice bunt. TAMUK scored three runs in the fifth inning to provide starter Jennifer Demay with enough support for the win. Amanda Chambless (4-3) took the loss. She gave up seven hits, four runs and struck out two in four innings of work. Crystal Hankel relieved Chambless and struck out four in two innings. Arnold paced the offense going 2-for-3 with a run and RBI to her credit.

Looking to split the LSC series with TAMUK, TWU put three runs on the scoreboard in the second inning en route to victory in game two. Danesi started the inning with a single before Megan Helms advanced her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Sarah White singled up the middle but was thrown out at second leaving Danesi at third. Rhonda Sherman scored her with a RBI single. After stealing second base, Sherman scored on an Easter double. Amanda Emory followed with a double of her own plating Easter.

With the lead Lindsy Russ-Keller (8-4) controlled the Javelinas giving up just five hits and striking out two to earn the complete game win. Emory was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a run and RBI. Easter added two hits, two runs and a RBI.

“We regrouped in the second game and stepped up. I told them we had to overcome that nonsense and go fight. I think Courtney, Amanda (Emory) and Sarah made some nice plays for us,” Baker added. “Stefani hit the ball well. I am thrilled to be out with a split and don’t know how the appeal will go but they clearly made the wrong ruling.”

TWU continues its 11-game spring break week of action at Incarnate Word on March 13 at 2:00 p.m. for a single game.
