RUSS-KELLER BREAKS STRIKEOUT RECORD WITH 13
DENTON , Texas – The Texas Woman’s University softball team remained unbeaten at home as Lindsy Russ-Keller broke the strikeout record and the offense put 17 runs on the board against the College of Saint Mary.
The Pioneers (9-5) beat the Flames 7-0 in game one and 10-0 in a run-rule shortened game two. TWU is now 7-0 at Pioneer Field this season.
“Before the game we talked about the regional rankings. I tried to explain to the kids that there is a group of five teams here and then six down here including us that are in a race to get consistent. The first one to do that will move up into those spots,” head coach Dianne Baker said. “The six teams are in a race to decide who will join the group. It will take timely hitting and consistent play to get there. We are at halfway point in season even though we haven’t played that much. They responded to the talk and played hard tonight.”
In the first game, Russ-Keller kept the Flames in check with a school record 13 strikeouts, facing just 23 batters in the game. She broke the previous mark of 11 shared by Karen Lundstedt ( 3/5/99 ) and Angela Burns ( 3/24/00 ).
“I didn’t know she did but I am obviously proud of Lindsy for breaking the record. The focus is on the team and getting them going,” Baker added.
The Pioneers offense did its part as well putting up seven runs. TWU scored two runs in the second and third frames and three in the fourth.
In the second inning, Amanda Arnold tripled to lead off the second inning and scored on a wild pitch. After Megan Helms drew a walk and advanced to second on a Stevie Smith bunt single. Helms moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a Flame error.
TWU added two more runs in the third utilizing one hit and two Flame miscues. Amanda Danesi and Megan Helms each had a RBI hit. The Pioneers had three hits and three runs in the fourth inning.
Courtney Martin, Arnold and Smith each had two hits in the game.
The Pioneer offense got going right away in game two scoring seven runs on six hits in the first inning. Rachel Townsend led off with a single. After Townsend scored, Lauren Gustartis tripled to right field scoring Rhonda Sherman and Martin. Arnold also tripled in the frame with a three-base hit down the left field line to plate Gustartis. Sarah White and Stefani Easter scored in the inning as well.
With a big lead, Amanda Chambless went to work in the circle striking out nine. TWU added a run in the third after Chelsea Reilly doubled, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.
Up 8-0, TWU added a couple of insurance runs in the fourth inning. Townsend reached on an error before scoring and Ashley Hartley scored after being hit by a pitch.
TWU returns to Pioneer field tomorrow, March 8, to host Southeastern Oklahoma State for a single game beginning at 6:00 p.m.
