TWU BEGINS TOURNAMENT WITH A WIN

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Woman’s University softball team opened up play at the St. Edward’s Tournament with a win, 2-0, over the host school.

The Pioneers (7-3) scored in the first and fifth innings and Amanda Chambless kept the Hilltoppers off balance for her third win of the year. Centerfielder Amanda Emory made some great defensive plays late in the game as well.

Courtney Martin walked in the first inning before scoring on a triple by Lauren Gustartis to put TWU ahead early. The Pioneers added another run in the fifth when Sarah White reached base on four balls. Emory sacrificed her to second before Rachel Townsend hit a RBI double to left field.

“This was a big win for us, beating St. Edward’s at their home in the first game of their tournament,” head coach Dianne Baker said. “As a whole the players came through for us today and that is what the game is about.”

The Pioneers continue play in Austin tomorrow, March 5, against New Mexico Highlands at 9:30 a.m.
