RUSS-KELLER STRIKES
OUT NINE IN WIN OVER NORTHWOOD
DENTON
, Texas – The Texas Woman’s University
softball team defeated Northwood, 3-0, behind a solid effort
by sophomore Lindsy Russ-Keller.
The Pioneers (6-3) and Knights (7-8) were
scheduled to play a doubleheader but both Northwood pitchers
were injured in the first game so game two was canceled.
“Yes, we wanted to play the second
game but I think there is an element of ethics in the game.
When a coach says to you we are injured because we hurt their
pitchers that you have to listen to that. It was a common
courtesy decision that I would want them to make the same
decision if the situation was reversed,”head coach
Dianne Baker said. “The other thing was we weren’t
seeing the ball early because our heads were moving. Once
our heads stayed in place we started hitting it hard. I would
have liked to see some more runs but we got enough to get
it done.”
The Pioneers put three runs across the plate
with six hits and two Knight errors. Megan Helms singled through
the left side in the second inning before advancing to second
on a sacrifice bunt, stealing second and scoring. Sarah White
hit a one-out single down the left field line to score Helms.
TWU added another run in the fifth inning.
Rhonda Sherman drew a two-out walk and stole second. Lauren
Gustartis advanced her to third and she scored on a Knight
error to put the Pioneers ahead, 2-0.
Helms started the sixth inning with a base
on balls. Easter followed with a base hit up the middle. Pinch-hitter
Amanda Danesi advanced Helms to third with a fly ball. Townsend
scored Helms with a RBI single to left field.
That was all the support Russ-Keller (4-2)
needed as she earned the complete game victory with nine strikeouts
and one walk. Russ-Keller struck out two Knights in the second
and fourth innings.
Helms led the offense with a 2-for-2 performance
at the plate. Townsend, Gustartis, Easter and White added a
hit.
The Pioneers are back in action this weekend
at the St. Edward’s Tournament. They play the first of
five games on March 4 against St. Edward’s at 3:00 p.m.
“We are going to an extremely
hard tournament, the hardest of the year and playing a lot
of ranked teams. It will make us a better team,”Baker
added.
