PIONEERS GET ONE WIN BEFORE RAIN
HALTS PLAY
IRVING,
Texas – The Texas Woman’s University softball
team earned one victory and was on its way to another when
rain ended the First Pitch Tournament in Irving, Texas, early.
The Pioneers (5-3) defeated Northeastern State, 4-0, and were ahead in the
third inning, 5-1, against Southeastern Oklahoma State.
“We played much better and hit the ball. Our defense and teamwork was solid
as well,” head coach Dianne Baker said. “We looked like the Pioneers
and acted like the Pioneers. I think the more we play the better hitters we will
become.”
Lindsy Russ-Keller (3-2) started on the mound against the Lady Reds. TWU scored
in the second inning after Megan Helms reached base via a walk and advanced
around the bases. Stefani Easter and Amanda Emory had singles before Rachel
Townsend scored her with a base hit to left field.
Lauren Gustartis walked to lead off the fifth inning. Amanda Arnold had a hit
and Helms doubled to score Gustartis and put the Pioneers ahead, 2-0. Another
lead off walk in the sixth hurt NSU as Easter reached base and scored on Townsend’s
double.
TWU added an insurance run in the seventh as Helms reached base and scored
on a Lady Red error. NSU managed just two hits against Russ-Keller. The Pioneers
had nine hits in the game. Townsend paced the offense with three hits. Arnold
and Helms added two each as well.
“I moved Rachel to leadoff today and she did a great job responding to
the challenge. Megan and Lindsy were great as well,” added Baker.
The Pioneer went ahead early against the Lady Savages but Mother Nature halted
the game before it was official. TWU finished the weekend 1-2.
TWU is back in action on March 2 hosting Northwood for two games beginning
at 5:00 p.m.
