PIONEERS BLANK COMETS IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP
DENTON , Texas – The No. 24 Texas Woman’s University softball team shut down the University of Texas at Dallas offense holding them scoreless to pick up two wins.
The Pioneers (4-1) hosted the Comets (0-2) for a non-conference doubleheader taking game one, 7-0, and game two, 5-0.
“Well after many game delays for two weeks we got going again. As a team we regrouped and decided to start the season over and try and get our momentum back,” head coach Dianne Baker said. “Across the board it was a well played game against a very well coached team. The pitching was working which relaxes the defense and starts the hitting.”
In the first game TWU’s offense scored all seven runs with two outs while racking up 11 hits.
TWU scored first putting two runs on the board with three hits in the first inning. With two outs, Rhonda Sherman started things with a triple to the right center field wall. Amanda Danesi singled up the middle to score Sherman . After Danesi stole second Lauren Gustartis scored her with a base hit through the right side.
The Pioneers added three runs in the second inning as Danesi cleared the bases with a two-out three RBI double to right center. Megan Helms, Amanda Emory and Courtney Martin crossed the plate.
Gustartis led off the fifth with a single followed by a Stefani Easter base hit. Emory brought them both home with a single to put the Pioneers in front for good 7-0.
Lindsy Russ-Keller (2-1) earned the complete game victory allowing three hits.
Sherman paced the offense with three hits, three RBI and a run scored. Gustartis and Easter added two hits.
TWU utilized solid defense and pitching to win game two. In the first inning, Martin drew a lead off walk before Townsend singled and they both scored on Comet throwing error.
Easter got the Pioneers out of a jam in the second inning with a double play as she caught the pop up and quickly doubled off the runner at second base.
In the fourth inning, Gustartis put the ball over the left center field fence for her second homer of the season. The hit scored Sherman who was at third base after a triple and put TWU up 4-0.
The Pioneers added another run in the fifth as Emory singled, stole second and third base prior to scoring on a Comet throwing error.
Martin showed a solid glove in the sixth recording all three outs in the inning on three fly balls to left field.
Five different players notched one hit and scored one run against three UTD pitchers. Amanda Chambless (2-0) was very efficient on the mound throwing 63 total pitches with 44 of those strikes.
“Offensively we had a good line up. Lauren proved she can hit and Amanda and Rhonda continued to hit the ball,” Baker added. “I am really proud of the defensive performance. They made some big plays.”
Next for TWU is the First Pitch Tournament in Irving Feb. 25-26. The Pioneers begin play against Central Oklahoma at 12:00 p.m. on Friday.
