WITHOUT RHYTHM PIONEERS FALL TO THUNDERWOLVES

PHOENIX , Ariz. – The No. 24 Texas Woman’s University softball team got back on the field for one of two games at the Rocky Mountain Athletic/Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament but couldn’t get in sync falling to Colorado State University-Pueblo, 6-3.

TWU (2-1) was scheduled to play No. 7 Colorado-Colorado Springs as well today but wet weather cancelled the game.

“I think we looked like a team that had not been on the field for a long time. We had no rhythm and were uncomfortable in the field and at the plate,” head coach Dianne Baker said. “We started to hit the ball in the sixth inning but it was too little, too late.”

CSU-Pueblo jumped on the board in the first inning to lead 1-0. TWU answered in the second inning when Lauren Gustartis hit a solo home run to tie up the score.

The Thunderwolves added three runs in the fourth inning. Down, 1-4 in the fifth inning, Megan Helms drew a walk to start the Pioneer offense. She advanced around the bases via a Sarah White sacrifice; a Rhonda Sherman ground out and scored on a double steal as Amanda Emory swiped second base.

CSU-Pueblo answered again in the bottom of the fifth adding two insurance runs. In their final at-bat, White doubled to centerfield and scored on a Sherman triple to left field.

Lindsy Russ-Keller started in the circle for TWU but only lasted four innings before Crystal Hankel relieved her. Russ-Keller struck out two, walked one and allowed four runs. Hankel had a strikeout and gave up a walk in two innings of action.

Gustartis was 1-for-2 at the plate as the designated player with her first home run of the season. Sherman and White each had one hit as well.

The Pioneers conclude play at the RMAC/LSC Crossover Tournament on Feb. 19 facing Mesa State at 8:00 a.m., Colorado School of Mines at 10:30 a.m. and Regis at 3:30 p.m.
