TWU SOFTBALL INKS THREE
DENTON,
Texas – Texas Woman’s University head
softball coach Dianne Baker announced the signing of Tiffanie
Boone, Ashley Martin and Mary Meghan Tomlinson to National Letters
of Intent to join the team for the 2005-06 season.
All three recruits join the Pioneers after impressive high school careers.
Boone and Tomlinson are outfielders and Martin is a pitcher.
“ Overall the staff has been working extremely hard to identify athletes
to get our program to the next level. The goal every year is to win a national
championship,” said Baker. “Marty (Blowers) and Jami (Ingram) have
done a great job recruiting.”
A native of Keller, Texas, Boone is a switch-hitter with speed. She also competes
for the track and volleyball teams at Keller High School. In 2004, she led
district 5A in stolen bases with 29 while hitting at a .368 clip. With her
senior season left, Boone has already been part of one state championship team
(2003). She played club softball with the Keller Rampage (1994-2003), Arlington
Cobras (2003) and Texas Elite 18 Gold (2004). A member of the National Junior
Honor Society, Boone was also named an Academic All-American (2004).
“ Tiffanie is the speedster we are missing. We have always had a speedster
and are missing that aspect right now. We need the element of speed to get to
the next level and our whole offense is centered around it as well,” stated
Baker. “She has speed on the bases, a quick jump from the plate and has
the ability to swing from the left and from the right with power as a switch-hitter.
Along with her range in the outfield, I look for Tiffanie to make an immediate
impact.”
A Santa Fe, Texas, native Martin is a three-year letterwinner for the Indians.
Last season, she earned all-district honors with a 17-2 pitching record as
the Indians were undefeated in district play and went to the 4A regional finals.
Martin posted a 23-4 record from the circle in both her freshman and sophomore
seasons. She played club softball for the Texas High Voltage (2001-02) and
Texas Connection (2003). Martin was named to both the academic and athletic
Who’s Who Among High School Students lists.
“ I didn’t set out to sign a pitcher because we have three but Ashley
will solidify our future. She throws a lot like Lindsy (Russ-Keller) and has
a great screwball and dominant riseball,” added Baker. “She also
has an immense presence on the mound. We gambled by signing her now because we
lose depth on the bench but I’d rather have her now than play against her
later.”
Tomlinson attends Castleberry High School in Fort Worth, Texas. A four-sport
athlete, she competes in volleyball, track and basketball as well. Tomlinson
has earned District 3A defensive MVP honors for the past three seasons for
the Lions. She played club softball for No Mercy, Speed and Softball Junk squads.
Tomlinson has earned Honor Roll accolades since her freshman year.
“ Mary Meghan is a gutsy kid who will run through a brick wall for us in the
outfield. She also has a lot of power at the plate and a great arm. She reminds
me of another one of our players, Rhonda Sherman,” said Baker. “I
look for Mary Meghan to make an instant impact on our team.”
