SOFTBALL HELPS HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
DENTON, Texas – The Texas Woman’s University
softball team recently spent a day working with Habitat for
Humanity
in the Denton community.
 Habitat
for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing
organization building simple,
decent, affordable housing in partnership with people in
need.
Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds
and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner)
families.
The
TWU team was part of a group from the First United Methodist
Church in Denton that spent their Saturday building a house
for
a family whose father
works in
Food Services at TWU.
“The
first initial phase has been finished and they hope to have
the home done before Thanksgiving,” said head coach
Dianne Baker, “All of
the credit goes to the church; we were just happy to help on the project.”
The
Pioneers worked in two shifts – the first shift assisted with the
framing of the house and the second shift worked on the roofing.
“The
team was happy to be out there,” said junior infielder
Rachel Townsend said, “The entire process is extremely
rewarding not only for the family, of course, but for us.
I’d never thought I’d be able
to put up the frame of a house. I’ve learned that service brings
you such joy; the feeling is unexplainable.”
Townsend
said that the TWU softball team has plans to continue volunteering
with Habitat
for Humanity in the Denton area.
