TWU ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME COMMITTEE SEEKS NOMINATIONS FOR 2006 INDUCTION
DENTON , Texas – The Texas Woman’s University Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame Committee is accepting nominations now through November 7 for its seventh class of inductees. This class will become members of the Hall of Fame at the spring induction ceremony during TWU’s Homecoming in April 2006. No more than five persons will be added to the Hall of Fame, which currently has these 24 distinguished individuals as its members:
- Louise Ritter - 1988 Olympic Gold Medalist in High Jump
- Dr. Bert Lyle - former TWU director of athletics, USA sprint, hurdle and relay teams coach
- Kathy Arendsen - pitcher on TWU’s 1979 AIAW/ASA National Championship team
- Mary (Poggy) Suba Barbaria - national field hockey and badminton champion
- Margaret Varner Bloss - international racquet sports star in tennis, badminton and squash
- Kitty Magee - first chairwoman of the Texas Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, former TWU faculty member
- Dianne Baker - five-sport letterwinner, shortstop on first TWU softball team to play in the AIAW/ASA Women’s College World Series, former TWU head softball coach
- Kathy Van Wyk - pitcher on TWU’s 1979 AIAW/ASA National Championship team
- Lisa Harlan Gandy – TWU’s first All-America gymnast and first national champion (1982, floor exercise)
- Peggy Allen McCoy – TWU’s all-time scoring leader in basketball and Kodak All-America Honorable Mention
- Donna Grant - middle blocker on TWU’s 1973 volleyball team that placed second in the AIAW National Championship
- Donna Terry - TWU head softball coach from 1977-81, professional softball pitcher
- Jo Kuhn - former TWU director of athletics, coach and faculty member, founder of the Pioneer Scholarship Campaign
- Willie Rucker – former softball player and assistant coach, catcher on TWU’s 1979 AIAW/ASA National Championship team
- Missy Mapes – former softball player and assistant coach, infielder and catcher on TWU’s 1979 AIAW/ASA National Championship team
- Leleith Hodges – sprinter from Jamaica, competed in the 1972, 1976 and 1980 Olympics
- Abbie Rutledge – played and coached badminton, field hockey and tennis at TWU
- Stephanie Ball Moreno – played volleyball earning all-district honors as a setter
- Tammi Julch Williams – dominant post player, is second on the all-time scoring list in basketball with 1,644 points in her career
- Audrey German Reid – national high jump champion, competed in the 1968, 1972 and 1976 Olympics
- Cheryl Beniot – three-sport athlete (volleyball, track and badminton), setter and team co-captain on TWU’s 1973 volleyball team that placed second in the AIAW National Championship
- Rochelle Barker Davis – member of 1971 and 1973 National Championship track teams
- Judy Murphey Hatch – TWU’s first great sprinter, member of 1971 AIAW National Championship team
- Dr. G. Ann Uhlir – former TWU Dean, behind approval of funding for Pioneer Hall, sought and obtained membership for TWU in the Lone Star Conference.
The TWU Athletics Hall of Fame was established as a vehicle to recognize and honor former student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and others who have excelled as representatives of the university and who have brought honor to the athletics program. The Hall is intended to emphasize excellence in athletics coupled with sportsmanship, character and integrity.
A student-athlete must have earned two or more letters in one sport, or one letter in two or more sports to qualify for nomination. She must also have completed a bachelor’s degree and must have completed her eligibility at least seven years prior to being considered for selection. The student-athlete must have demonstrated good citizenship attributes after leaving the institution.
A coach, athletics administrator, support staff person, or others being considered must have served the university for at least seven years. Such individuals must have been out of the position for five years to be considered and, in all cases, the record of the individual must be of such outstanding merit in athletics that there can be no question concerning the individual’s qualification for the Hall of Fame.
No nominee for the Hall of Fame will be inducted unless she or he will be present at the induction ceremony. A family member or representative must agree to be present in the event of a posthumous induction.
Each inductee will have a plaque in her or his honor displayed in the Hall of Fame and will also receive a duplicate plaque documenting the honor.
Anyone may submit a letter of recommendation for nomination to the Hall of Fame. Letters of recommendation should be sent to the Hall of Fame Committee, TWU Intercollegiate Athletics, P.O. Box 425349, Denton, TX, 76204-5349. Information about nominees may also be faxed to 940-898-2372.
