THREE FORMER PIONEERS EARN NCAA DIVISION II DEGREE-COMPLETION AWARD
DENTON, Texas (July 9) – Three former Texas Woman’s University student-athletes - Jill Arnold (pictured), Emily Meinen, and Lindsy Russ-Keller - have all been awarded a NCAA Division II Degree-Completion Award for 2007-08.
The purpose of the Division II Degree-Completion Award program, which was established in 2001, is to provide financial assistance to deserving student-athletes who are working towards the completion of a first baccalaureate degree. Student-athletes who have exhausted their athletics eligibility and have received athletics financial aid are eligible candidates for this award.
The selection process for the national award emphasizes the academic performance of the student-athlete. Other factors considered are financial circumstances, athletic achievement and involvement in campus and community activities.
Arnold will be completing her degree in math at TWU. A native of Alvin, Texas, she earned two varsity letters for the Pioneers volleyball team (2005, 2006). Last season, Arnold played in 58 games for TWU, registering 48 kills, 509 assists (the second highest total on the team), and 23 service aces. She also excelled in the classroom, earning a spot on the 2006 Lone Star Conference (LSC) North Division Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
Meinen, who will be finishing her degree in business administration, enjoyed a stellar four-year career (2003-2006) on the TWU soccer team. Last season, she led the Pioneers in goals (8), points (18), shots (65), and shots on goal (30). One of her goals was a game-winning marker, and she had a three-game goal-scoring streak from October 3-8, 2006. Meinen also finished tied for third in the LSC in goals scored and was second amongst all LSC players in shots. Her strong play earned her a slot on the 2006 LSC All-Conference second team.
Russ-Keller, a four year letterwinner (2004-07) on the TWU softball team, will continue her work towards a criminal justice degree. A product of San Leon, Texas, she was the Pioneers top performer in the circle during the 2007 season. She led TWU in virtually every pitching category, including wins (12), games started (24), complete games (23), shutouts (3), innings pitched (165), and strikeouts (106). For her efforts last season, she was named to the 2007 LSC South Division All-Conference second team. The All-Conference selection was the fourth of Russ-Keller’s career. She was chosen for the first team in 2005 and 2006 and voted to the second team in 2004. Russ-Keller was also a two-time member (2005, 2007) of the LSC South Division All-Academic team and a part of the LSC South Division Commissioner’s Honor Roll in 2006.
