THREE PIONEERS EARN ARTHUR ASHE JR. SPORTS SCHOLAR AWARD

DENTON, Texas (June 25)Three Texas Woman’s University student- athletes - Kelley Humphries, Brisa Fuentes, and Romy Luna - recently received a 2007 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award.

Diverse Issues in Higher Education (formerly Black Issues in Higher Education) established the Sports Scholars Awards to honor undergraduate students of color who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination. To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2; and be active on their campuses or in their communities. The awards were inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.’s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis.

Humphries, a senior member of the 2006-07 TWU basketball team, was chosen for the basketball first team for the third consecutive year. A native of Coupland, Texas, Humphries graduated from TWU last month with a 3.95 cumulative GPA and B.A. in Biology/Pre-Med.

Fuentes, a junior gymnast for the Pioneers, was named to the gymnastics first team. A local product from Denton Ryan high school, she is an elementary education major with a 3.58 cumulative GPA.

A junior soccer player for TWU, Luna was chosen for the soccer first team. Luna, who hails from Lewisville, Texas, carries a 3.82 cumulative GPA and is majoring in kinesiology.
