TWU’S ACADEMIC STREAK RUNS TO 50 SEMESTERS

DENTON, Texas (May 29) – Texas Woman’s University student-athletes posted a 3.25 grade point average in the recently completed 2007 spring semester. This marks the 50th consecutive academic semester of a cumulative 3.0 GPA or better by the Pioneers.

The TWU volleyball squad recorded the highest team GPA with a 3.60. This is the team’s highest grade point average since head coach Shelly Barberee took the helm in Spring 2003.

The gymnastics team had the second-highest team GPA in the department with a 3.575. The soccer team was third with a 3.32 GPA, the highest ever for this program which was added in Fall 2002 under head coach Fleur Benatar.

Individually, 14 student-athletes earned a 4.0 GPA for the spring semester: four from gymnastics - Brista Michael, Keri Miller, Brittany Parker and Rachel Zimmerman; four from soccer - Jacqueline Horner, Christine Hornisher, Chelsie Kale and Aly Vincent; three from volleyball - Robin Hawkins, Heather Marcus and Kandis Schroeder; two from softball - Kacey Gilmore and Allie Packer; and one from basketball - Jennifer Schilb.

“To hit 50 straight semesters of outstanding academic achievement is a true reflection of our commitment to student first and athlete second,” Director of Athletics Chalese Connors said. “I want to congratulate our coaches and the student-athletes they recruit to TWU because they must believe in this commitment and then fulfill their potential each and every semester.”

There were 77 Pioneers on the spring rosters for TWU’s five NCAA Division II sports: basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball which compete in the Lone Star Conference and gymnastics which competes as an independent.
