TWU ATHLETICS ENDS YEAR WITH BANQUET TO HONOR STUDENT-ATHLETES
DENTON , Texas – After a banner year in which all five sports advanced to the postseason in the same season for the first time in a decade, Texas Woman’s University Intercollegiate Athletics held its annual awards banquet on April 30. Teams and individuals were honored for their athletic and academic accomplishments in basketball, gymnastics, soccer, softball, volleyball and athletic training.
“What a year! We had so much to celebrate and the afternoon was truly a special event for our student-athletes, their families, the coaches and staff,” Director of Athletics Chalese Connors said. “The awards banquet is also a great way for the Pioneers to say thank you to all of our loyal supporters.”
Chancellor and President Dr. Ann Stuart was in attendance to present the 2005-06 President’s Award, the highest honor awarded to a current student-athlete. This year’s recipient is senior gymnast Bethany Rehm, who demonstrated outstanding excellence in her sport, in the classroom and in the promotion of TWU Athletics.
Rehm was selected as one of three captains for the Pioneers this season. She capped off her four-year career with a team and individual national championship in 2006. First, Rehm helped TWU capture its eighth USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championship before she ended the three-day competition by winning the individual title on the uneven bars. She earned USAG all-America honors on the bars and Midwest Independent all-Conference second team recognition. Her freshman season, the Pioneers also won the USAG team title.
The senior was also recognized by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women as a Scholastic All-American. She has also earned USAG Scholar-Athlete and All-Conference Scholastic honors.
Rehm is a member of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, the honor society for business, Sigma Beta Delta, the Athenian Honor Society and National Society for Collegiate Scholars in addition to the Student-Athlete Advisory committee. Bethany has volunteered her time to help the United Way, Habitat for Humanity, Susan G. Komen Foundation, American Red Cross, Adopt a family and with Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.
Four other Pioneer student-athletes were nominated for the award: junior Kelley Humphries, a three-year letterwinner in basketball; senior Amanda Arnold, a four-year letterwinner in softball; senior Carley Messmer, a three-year letterwinner in volleyball; and sophomore Romy Luna, a two-year letterwinner in soccer.
The Kitty Magee Award, recognizing the most dedicated student-athlete, was given to a pair of seniors - volleyball player Trina Berend and basketball player Ashley Browning . The Jo Kuhn Award, which honors outstanding leadership, was given to junior volleyball player Robin Hawkins. The athletic trainers selected dual-sport athlete Lindsey McCutcheon (volleyball and basketball) for their Golden Cast Award, an honor given to the student-athlete who is the most conscientious about the treatment and rehabilitation of her injuries.
Outstanding Athlete Awards were given to an outstanding individual in each sport: Messmer (volleyball), senior Courtney Colmer and junior Margaret Wimbish (basketball), sophomore Jennifer Kingsbury (gymnastics), junior Amanda Emory (softball) and sophomore Sue Cribbes (soccer) . The Outstanding Student Athletic Trainer Award was given to junior Keena Rogers.
