PUTTING FORE PIONEERS RAISES MONEY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS
DENTON , Texas – Students, faculty, staff and Denton community members made the second annual Putting Fore Pioneers Tournament a successful event again, raising $682.00 for athletics scholarships.
“We are in the middle of the biggest push of the Pioneer Athletics Fund Drive and Putting Fore Pioneers has come through for us again,” Director of Athletics Chalese Connors said. “There was increased student participation and I feel this event will continue to grow. Because of the efforts of the Student Union and the Athletics staff, we spread the word about the importance of our fund drive and we’re a little closer to our goal.”
A nine-hole miniature golf course was set up on the second floor of the Texas Woman’s University Student Union. The putting competition included a student and a faculty/staff division. Brandon Wilson was the student champion with a score of 16. The twosome of John Luburich and Ashley Fennell won the student team event for the second consecutive year with a score of 39. In the faculty/staff division, David Sweeten, the assistant director of the student union, carded a 19 to win the individual title. Sweeten and Kyle Voyles, the student union director, combined to take the team title with a low score of 39.
In conjunction with the golf tournament, a raffle featuring more than 35 prizes was held. Voyles and student Christian Wilson each won a DVD player.
Each year, approximately 80 Pioneer student-athletes participate in intercollegiate athletics while also excelling academically at the University. Almost all of these outstanding young women receive some form of scholarship assistance, ranging from in-kind gifts of equipment to full scholarships that cover tuition, fees, housing, books and food. It is important to note that TWU Athletics is not allocated any scholarship money by the State of Texas. All scholarship funds must be raised through the annual Pioneer Athletics Fund Drive.
Next year, a full grant-in-aid at TWU will cost $11,639 and the goal of this year’s campaign is to raise $397,098 through a combination of donations, fundraisers, and generated revenue from the Athletics department and its summer camps.
