WIMBISH LEADS TWU PAST TAMUK

KINGSVILLE , Texas – Texas Woman’s University began Lone Star Conference South Division play with a 64-57 victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville behind a double-double performance from junior Margaret Wimbish.

Wimbish scored 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Pioneers (6-3, 1-0) came back from a 10-point second half deficit to beat the Javelinas (3-8, 0-1).

“I was really impressed with Margaret. She was big time and consistently scoring,” head coach Rene Hanebutt said. “She is hard to defend and is a nightmare for other teams.”

TWU and TAMUK played a close first half. The Javelinas built a six-point lead early but the Pioneers ended the half strong. TWU went on an 8-3 run to take a 28-27 lead into halftime.

The Javelinas made their first three shots of the second half to build a 10-point lead with 9:27 remaining. TWU started chipping away at the lead from the free throw line. The Pioneers made 13 of 16 shots from the charity stripe in the second half.

Kristal Robeson put TWU on top with a three-pointer at the 3:13 mark. She added a jumper on the Pioneers next possession to close the door on the Javelinas.

“At the end of game Kristal was huge. She gave us the lead and got the momentum back in our favor,” Hanebutt added. “She faced intense pressure the whole game and handled it well.”

It was the fourth straight loss for TAMUK this season. The Pioneers are now 11-24 all-time against the Javelinas.

“ Kingsville is so athletic. They put more pressure on ball than we’ve seen all year. They are really fast and aggressive,” Hanebutt said. “We didn’t handle it at the beginning but got better throughout the game. I am proud that we hung in there.”

Wimbish notched a double-double for the third time this season. She was 9 of 15 from the field and made 10 of 12 free throws in 38 minutes of action.

Robeson, Ashley Browning and Courtney Colmer joined Wimbish in double figures. Robeson played the entire game recording 13 points, three rebounds and five assists. Browning and Colmer each added 10 points.

The Pioneers begin the New Year with a game against Incarnate Word on Jan. 2 at 6:00 p.m. in Magee Arena.
