ACCURATE SHOOTING PUTS PIONEERS OVER CARDINALS
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Behind a career-best 29 points from senior Ashley Browning, Texas Woman’s defeated Incarnate Word, 71-67, in non-conference action.
TWU (5-3) turned in its best shooting performance of the season, making 27 of 48 field goals (56.3 percent) including nine three-pointers. The Cardinals (1-8) outscored the Pioneers in the second half but it wasn’t enough to overcome a seven-point halftime deficit.
“Ashley was huge tonight. She made played hard and made key baskets. Ashley is hard to defend inside and outside,” head coach Rene Hanebutt said. “We played well defensively. It was a great team effort.”
Browning started the game with an old-fashioned three-point play for the Pioneers. With 4:37 left the score was tied before TWU ended the first half with a 10-3 run. Courtney Colmer started the rally with a three-pointer and jumper. Browning added a three followed by a Kelley Humphries lay-up putting the Pioneers ahead by seven points.
The Pioneers scored first after intermission on a Browning lay-up. UIW took the lead when Kim Robinson hit a three with 16:06 left. Browning responded with a trey to tie the game and sealed the win by making five of six free throws down the stretch.
Colmer was also in double-digits with 17 points. TWU got solid efforts from Jennifer Schilb and Whitney Moore off the bench. Schilb added 11 points and eight rebounds. Moore had seven caroms.
“Whitney and Jen were important off the bench today. They gave us a lift,” Hanebutt added. “Maggy (Deweber) started and had five assists. Jen played awesome and Courtney shot well.”
It was the 15 th meeting all-time between the two teams with TWU holding an 11-4 advantage. The Pioneers and Cardinals play again this season on Jan. 2 nd in Denton at 6:00 p.m.
Next, TWU travels to Texas A&M-Kingsville for a Lone Star Conference contest on Dec. 29 at 2:00 p.m.
