WIMBISH SCORES 29 BUT THREE-POINT SHOOTING HURTS PIONEERS
DENTON , Texas – Junior Margaret Wimbish recorded a season-high 29 points but Texas Woman’s University was defeated by an athletic Southeastern Oklahoma State squad 63-52.
The Pioneers (4-3) shot a dismal 2-for-18 (11.1 percent) from the three-point line. TWU entered the game 48-for-100 (48.0 percent) from behind the arc. The Lady Savages improved to 4-4 on the year.
“The shooting hurt us; it is so much of what we have done well. It was our first game this season not around 40 percent. I knew eventually it was going to come,” head coach Rene Hanebutt said. “Not having Ashley (Browning), one of our leading scorers hurt us as well.”
Freshman Maggy Deweber hit a three-pointer and assisted a Wimbish lay-up to begin the game for TWU. Deweber started her first game as a Pioneer in place of Browning, who missed the game with an ankle injury. Jennifer Schilb gave the Pioneers a two-point lead at the 12:54 mark. SOSU went on a 7-0 run after that to take the lead into halftime.
The Lady Savages built a 15-point margin after halftime before Wimbish took over in the paint. Wimbish scored the Pioneers next seven points with a jumper, three and lay-up to cut the lead to eight points. SOSU outscored TWU 8-5 in the next five minutes for an 11-point lead. Wimbish closed out the game with the final 10 points for TWU.
“Southeastern is quick. They don’t a have a true post at all which enabled Marge. She played great and was big-time offensively. I was impressed with how she played and made plays down the stretch,” Hanebutt added. “Overall I was not happy that we lost by any stretch of the imagination but pleased considering that we didn’t shoot well or have Ashley.”
Wimbish had eight rebounds and two blocks as well in 31 minutes. Courtney Colmer and Jennifer Schilb added six points each.
The Pioneers have an eight-day break before playing at Incarnate Word on Dec. 18 at 2:00 p.m.
