PIONEERS FALL AT BUZZER TO BEARKATS
DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University fell to Sam Houston State, 57-59, at the buzzer in non-conference action at Magee Arena.
The Bearkats (2-3) notched the win as Stephanie Trachier hit a three-pointer as the horn sounded. It was the second meeting all-time between the two schools. The Pioneers (4-2) beat the Bearkats, a NCAA Division I team in the Southland Conference, last season.
“We didn’t play well. It was our own fault; we were not ready to play. We came in overconfident and didn’t execute on either end of the floor,” head coach Rene Hanebutt said. “The bottom line is I thought we deserved to get beat tonight.”
SHSU came out of the gates in a full-court press which led to an early 13-5 lead. The Bearkats took a three-point advantage into halftime. Margaret Wimbish paced the Pioneers with 12 points in the first 20 minutes of action.
“We didn’t really expect the press but we have seen it. Earlier this year St. Mary’s defended us the same way,” Hanebutt added.
In the second half, senior Courtney Colmer put TWU on her back. Colmer scored 15 of her 18 points after intermission including the first seven Pioneer points. Colmer opened the half with a three-pointer to tie the game followed by a jumper and two free throws. Colmer hit another three at the 9:51 mark to put the Pioneers ahead by seven.
The Bearkats tied the game and took the lead on two Erica Parker free throws down the stretch. With 20 seconds left, Colmer banked in a three high off the glass to make the score, 55-56. Then, TWU got the ball back and went inside to Wimbish for a one-point lead with 11 seconds remaining. After a TWU timeout, SHSU took the ball the length of the court for the Trachier game-winner at the buzzer.
“Courtney was huge in the second half. She hates to lose, is a senior and knows what it takes to win,” Hanebutt stated. “We got out hustled. They played harder and deserved to win.”
Wimbish recorded a double-double with a game-high 20 points and 12 rebounds. Colmer finished with 18 points and three caroms.
The Pioneers next game is Saturday, Dec. 10, against Southeastern Oklahoma State at 7:00 p.m. featuring an appearance by Santa in Pioneer Hall. Starting at 6:30 p.m., kids can meet Santa and have a free Polaroid photo taken before the game.
