TWU WINS DEFENSIVE BATTLE
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Texas Woman’s University ended Northeastern State ’s five-game winning streak with a 58-53 win at Dobbins Field House.
The Pioneers (4-1) shot a season-low .426 percent from the field but played tough defense for the Lone Star Conference crossover win.
“It was a defensive ballgame. We didn’t shoot well but kept playing,” head coach Rene Hanebutt said. “We remained patient and hit shots late.”
The game was tied at halftime as both teams struggled offensively. The Pioneers made nine-of-27 field goal attempts (33.3 percent) in the first half. The Lady Reds were six-of-25 in the first 20 minutes.
Courtney Colmer rallied the Pioneers in the second half hitting four consecutive three-pointers. Colmer put TWU ahead but NSU battled back. The Pioneers sealed the win with six free throws down the stretch. After Lady Red fouls Colmer, Kristal Robeson and Margaret Wimbish each hit two free throws.
Wimbish led TWU with a game-high 17 points and seven rebounds. Colmer added 16 points and six caroms. Maggy Deweber had 11 points including three three-pointers as well.
The Pioneers are back in action on Dec. 7 against Sam Houston State at 7:00 p.m.
