ROBESON AND BROWNING TURN IN CAREER PERFORMANCES AS PIONEERS TRIUMPH
DENTON , Texas – Sophomore Kristal Robeson recorded a triple-double and senior Ashley Browning tallied a double-double as Texas Woman’s University defeated Southern Arkansas, 75-61, in non-conference action at Magee Arena.
Robeson had 14 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists leading the Pioneers (3-0) to victory. Browning had a career-high 28 points and 10 rebounds. TWU is off to their best start since the 1990-91 season.
“We had people step up and play big tonight offensively. Ashley played phenomenally. She shot well and did a good job,” head coach Rene Hanebutt said. “Kristal played awesome. She did exactly what we asked of her. She followed the game plan from start to finish. I was really excited to see she had a triple-double tonight.”
TWU won the game with accurate shooting. The Pioneers shot 55.3 percent (26 of 47) from the field and 58.8 percent (10 of 17) from behind the arc. Margaret Wimbish and Browning scored 14 of the first 16 points for TWU. The Pioneers took a 10-point advantage into halftime.
After intermission, TWU built a 20-point lead as SAU struggled offensively. The Pioneers continued to perform on offense making six of seven three-pointers in the half. Browning added an old-fashioned three-point play as well at the 15:43 mark with a lay-up and free throw.
“I thought our team came out and executed on the defensive end. We forced them to take shots they didn’t want and rebounded extremely well. That was the key to the game,” Hanebutt said. “I told them if we out rebounded them we would win. Overall I was extremely pleased with the outcome.”
Wimbish and Courtney Colmer also scored in double figures for TWU. Wimbish had 17 points and nine rebounds. Colmer added 11 points, seven caroms and five assists.
TWU returns to action on Dec. 1 at Central Oklahoma, tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
