PIONEERS SET TEMPO AND ROUT RATTLERS
WICHITA FALLS , Texas – Texas Woman’s University shot nearly 60 percent from the three-point line en route to an 81-49 win over St. Mary’s at the Midwestern State Classic.
The Pioneers (2-0) got off to a quick start making seven of 10 three-pointers in the first half to lead 50-31 at intermission. TWU also turned 18 St. Mary (0-2) turnovers into 28 points.
“St. Mary’s is good but we played exceptionally well. I thought the key was the defensive start. We set the tempo and got after them to create transition points,” head coach Rene Hanebutt said. “We followed the game plan to a T.”
TWU jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the game, making four three-pointers and a jumper, before St. Mary’s scored. The Pioneers led throughout the game and held a 19-point advantage at halftime. The largest lead was a 35-point margin with 4:37 left in the game.
“Overall I was really pleased. We came out and controlled the game from tip-off,” Hanebutt said. “We were able to maintain the tempo throughout the game.”
Five Pioneers scored in double-digits led by Margaret Wimbish with 16 points and 17 rebounds. Ashley Browning and Courtney Colmer both had 14 points. Kristal Robeson and Whitney Moore added 13 points each as well.
The Pioneers have a nine-day break before hosting Southern Arkansas on Nov. 28 at 6:00 p.m. in Magee Arena.
