PIONEERS OPEN SEASON WITH VICTORY
WICHITA FALLS , Texas – Texas Woman’s University began the 2005-06 season with a 72-61 win over East Central at the Midwestern State Classic.
The Pioneers (1-0) beat the Tigers (0-2) in head coach Rene Hanebutt’s debut. TWU was efficient on offense shooting 50 percent (21 of 42) from the field. The Pioneers made 24 of the 31 free throws as well.
“The game was long with three delays because the goals kept sliding down. We were shooting at eight-foot baskets,” Hanebutt said. “The girls executed on offense and got some great looks. In the second half the guards passed extremely well.”
TWU took the lead early with a Kelley Humphries jumper and two free throws by Margaret Wimbish. The first half was back and forth until a three-pointer by Courtney Colmer started an 11-2 Pioneer run. A Wimbish lay-up put TWU ahead by 11 and propelled them to a 35-28 halftime lead.
ECU started the second half with a quick seven points to tie the contest. TWU responded with a lay-up and jumper to reclaim the lead. The Tigers tied the game again with just over 10 minutes remaining but the Pioneers scored the next seven points en route to the win.
Colmer led the way with 20 points and four assists. Ashley Browning tallied a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Wimbish 16 points as well.
“For the first time out it was good. We did the things we needed to win,” Hanebutt added. “We shot free throws well at the end of the game. We have to work on our defense.”
The Pioneers continue play at the MSU Classic against St. Mary’s on Nov. 19 at 5:00 p.m.
